CLASSIC J.I. CASE TRACTOR YEAR IDENTIFICATION by SERIAL NUMBERS 1912-1955
|
The Photo to the left shows
the serial plate on our
V Model underneath the start
switch on the dash.
Inspect your serial tag
carefully!!!
Many times we have come
across serial plates with the
left screw drilled right through
the first number on the plate.
Case serial numbers are vital to their owners as they contain specific model information characteristics.
On the serial plate the year of manufacture was included in the serial number from 1928 until 1952. Beginning in 1912, up and until 1928 serial numbers were assigned in blocks without regard to the year they were made.
The table below contain the block serial numbers for that period:

In the year 1929, with the introduction of the Case C, L, & R Models, the J.I. Case
Company came out with a six digit serial number system. This was when they
introduced the encoded year within the serial number. This six digit numbering
system can be used to decode the year in two steps.
In the first step the first and fourth digit are combined NOT ADDED TOGETHER.
e.g. the Serial Number 344278 combine the first digit"3" and the fourth digit "2" to
create the number "32".
In the second step take the combined number and subtract three e.g.
Step 1-- 344278--=32
Step 2-- 32-3=29
The year this particular tractor was made is 1929..
In 1936 and 1937 J.I. Case production was so great that the 6 digit serial
number had to be changed to a seven digit numbering system.
At this time they retained the six digit system to configure the year code.
If your tractors seven digit number begins with 41 or less, the six digit rule will
apply.
If your tractor is 42 or larger the seven digit rule applies.
Special Thanks from Caseworld to our Australian friend Bob for sending us this
little known info.
In the year 1938 with the future coming of the Flambeau Red Series (1939)
J.I. Case Tractors switched their numbering system for serial numbers once again.
From 1938-1953 Case used a seven digit number once again including the year of
production by code.
This time instead of combining the first and fourth digit, they, combined the first
two numbers, then subtracted four from the total to figure the year of production.
e.g.serial number 4807276
Step 1 4807276--First digit 4 and Second digit 8="48"
Step 2 The combined number "48" subtract(-) 4=44
The year of production is 1944.
In 1954 The J.I. Case Tractor Company changed the seven digit numbers again.
The company casted their serial numbers in blocks and would attach the year code
number to the tractor upon shipment.
As the engine block serial numbers did not include a prestamped "year" code, it
would be hand stamped into the engine block with the dash plate attachment upon
shipment.
Because of this the year numbers in the engine block tend to wear and fade with
age in the current era. This leaves new owners in confusion as to what year the D,
LA, S model they own, may be, when they find it does not conform to the seven
digit numbering system.
These tractors though manufactured in 1952 were sold in 1953 and 1954.
The Block numbers are as follows:
